Cook County Board Approves Settlement for Panther Suit
UPI
The Cook County Board gave final approval Monday to a $1.85 million settlement of a 12-year-old civil rights suit filed by survivors of two Black Panther Party leaders shot to death in a police raid.

The suit stems from a raid Dec. 4, 1969, at the Panthers' headquarters by 14 policemen seeking weapons.

Shooting began as the policemen converged on the building. Mark Clark and Fred Hampton were killed. Four others in the apartment were wounded. It was never resolved who fired first or how many shots were fired by the Panthers, but the raid resulted in a bitter dispute.

The survivors filed a $47.7 million suit, naming as defendants a wide range of governments and government officials. The trial ran 320 days.

The defendants won the original trial but an appeals court later awarded the Panthers' relatives a new trial. The Cook County state's attorney's office recommended the settlement.

  1. I dont understand why people kill others who are trying to help make themselves better. I thought that was what the United States of America was all about, i thought that was why we left Britain, to be free and be able to grow, yet here we are, having trials about police brutality when all the Black Panthers want to do is promote education and self worth to thosw hwo have been oppressed for hundreds of years. Adults should encourage this behavior because in the end it is the youth and the people who are willing to take a stand and help educate and raise awarness that control the world.
The Black Panthers have organized a number of programs to help those who have been oppressed, programs such as the free breakfast program and things of that sort.

  2. I do not understand why people make such an effort to hold org.that help young people become effective community citizens down. The Black Panthers want to raise awarness about education, they teach self-worth and respect for all, they have so many programs and give so many inspirational lectures it doesnt make sense to me as to why people would kill these people, it is not as though they are breaking the law, they are trying to raise awarness about an issue, i thought that was what the united states was about, i thought that was why we left britain, i thought it was so we could be better, so we could be better, and yet here we are, trying to kill the people who are trying to make change for the good. people always say they want this changed or that, yet, when someone actully does something, we give them hell for it.
I found that the actual Black panthers website was a very valuable source for all the butler/call projects that involve the BP. here's the URL
